Jeans Cut Types

By Anna Lynn Sibal

When we browse for a pair of jeans at a department store or clothing boutique, one of the questions that a sales clerk may ask us is what jean cut we are looking for. When we skim through style guides or fashion magazines, it is not improbable that we encounter the term “jean cut” as well. So what is a jean cut?

Some people may think of the term “jean cut” as some esoteric phrase relating to the lore of the denim jeans. But the fact is that the meaning behind the term is quite mundane – jean cut just talks about the actual shape of the pants.

When we talk about women’s jeans, there are a lot of jean cuts out there to speak of. Some are fads that will be forgotten after a season or two. Some, however, have survived the fickleness of fashion to become a classic jean cut.

What jean cuts have we seen since the jeans have become an item that fashionable people wear?

1. Straight leg – as the term suggests, it is a jean cut where the leg is narrow and straight. It does not go wide at the calf or ankles.

2. Flared – as opposed to the straight leg, the flared cut is narrow at the thigh and knee, and then widens at the calf.

3. Boot cut – a jean cut that runs straight at the thigh but flares just a little near the ankles.

4. Stove pipe – straight leg but with a looser fit.

5. Bell bottoms – jeans with legs that flare really widely; very popular during the 60s.

6. Tapered – a jean cut where the leg runs narrow as it reaches the ankle.

7. Skinny – really tight jeans that fit closely around the leg.

8. Capri – a pant cut where the hem is just below the knee.

9. Cropped – a jean cut that covers only about three-fourths of the whole leg.

10. Cuffed – refers to a jean leg that is folded at the end.

People almost all the time choose jean cuts that feel good and comfortable to them. It also depends on the personal preference and style that the person is going for when buying a pair of jeans. Of course, fashion counts and whatever is hot and fashionable today will definitely sell fast before the frenzy fades. Bell bottoms were so hot that they defined an entire era, but who wears bell bottoms today?

Whenever you buy a pair of jeans, keep in mind that you should choose a pair of jeans that fits you and flatters your body type, regardless of the cut. Some cuts are good for some body types while others are not. Knowing your body type is crucial when it comes to choosing what jeans to buy and wear. That is because whether you like it or not the wrong kind of jeans will embellish all the curves and bulges that you may want to hide regardless of its cut.
